bullet Where can I access the Wireless LAN?

  • You can access the network within the Library and on campus as long as you are within 20 metres of unobstructed signal range
  • There is at least one Access Point (wireless base station) on every floor in the Library building, so you can access Internet practically anywhere in the Library. However, signal strength may vary from one location to another. Basically the further you are from the nearest Access Point, the weaker the signal strength

bullet How do I get started with Wireless LAN access?

  • Boot up your notebook
  • Slot in or activate your wireless LAN card. If your LAN card has not been configured to access TP Wireless LAN, follows instructions for configuration below
  • Check the signal strength of your Wireless LAN card is strong. Otherwise, please move to a location where you can get a good connection
  • If the above is done, you should be ready to access the Internet

bullet How do I configure my Wireless LAN card to access TP's Wireless LAN?

Step 1 : In your wireless LAN card properties/settings:

  • specify “TP” as the wireless LAN/network name
  • specify a computer/station name for your notebook (if necessary)

Step 2 : In your browser’s proxy setting:

  • check the box for "Accessing the internet with proxy server"
  • specify “proxy.tp.edu.sg” for the proxy server, with port “80”
  • under "Do not use proxy server for addresses beginning with" enter the sentence "*.tp.edu.sg"·

bullet What is the speed of the Wireless LAN?

  • Each Access Point supports up to 250 users, depending on how heavily the bandwidth is utilized. It has a shared bandwidth of 11 Mbps

bullet Which notebooks do not work well with TP's Wireless LAN ?

Notebooks with built-in wireless adapters that accept only channel 1 – 11 do not work well with TP’s wireless LAN. PCMCIA Wireless LAN cards that accept only channel 1-11 do not work well with TP’s wireless LAN either

Examples of incompatible notebooks are

  • IBM Thinkpad R51
  • Fujitsu S6220

Examples of incompatible PCMCIA wireless LAN card are
